Hey all, I'm in Southern India for a few more months. Is there anywhere to see Bhangra in Bangalore, Chennai, or Mumbai? I figured not in Mysore, Coimbatore, Madurai right? I am down with tamil electronic music as well if people have leads on that.
What about good cd shops?

Re: Bhangra in India?
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 1:33 AMBooey, try ask if there is a Planet M in your city. I know they're expanding throughout India and my experience at their stores has been more than satisfactory. Their employees are very professional and will help you look for any item, often checking in their back stock if it's not found on the storeshelves. I gave them really good business when I was in India and made away with many a rare musical find.
Bhangra's popularity across the Indian subcontinent and South Asia means that while admittedly you won't see much traditional bhangra, you'll prolly hear it fused into the local music. I know a lot of Kollywood (Tamil filmi music) has coopted the bhangra sound in recent years. And the popularity of bhangra remixes means you'll be very likely to see folks doing bhangra moves in dance clubs.
As far as Tamil electronica, can't wait to hear from you--your report once you've descended on the local music scene via music shops and clubs in Chennai ;)
AAJ BHANGRA PAUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D -

Fri, May 5, 2006 - 2:34 AMjust saw there was replies, thanks :) yeah i know its from the north.
there are planet Ms around. I find it hard to sort through stuff since some of it is less electronic music proper than just straight up pop. Moreover Chennai is pretty reserved and seems to have no nightlife to speak of outside of crazy expensive hotels.
Any suggestions for Mumbai? -

But that's true of India and other countries in the region to some extent where nightlife is often a luxury experience concentrated in posh venues rather than scattered all over in little hole in the wall joints :)
Re: Mumbai, dunno bout bhangra in particular, but the trendy resto-bar-club type venues that keep coming up seem to be in the Bandra district with names like Seijo and Zenzi. You might wanna check with the locals or check listings in the paper/phone/website to see if any of them have a dedicated bhangra nite. And oh, that nightclub in the JW Marriott is quite a happening place as well, I hear.
<less electronic music proper than just straight up pop>
That's true as well--the majority of the bounty I made off from Planet M was Bollywood, Bhangra, Hindi remixes, and som Classical. Altho I did find the then newly released Vande Mataram An Electronic Exploration concept album where many of the up and coming Indian electronic artisits such as MIDIval PunditZ, Bandish Projekt, Jayant, and Func International do their take on the popular anthem.
Booey, are you more interested in the Indian electronica scene? You might want to also join 604 India which is a tribe for the Indian Underground. While many listings there refer to Goa, many of the members should also be able to hook you up with more underground electronica stuff in the Mumbai area and beyond.

Re: Bhangra in India?
Mon, June 12, 2006 - 8:57 PMFind the Punjabis and you will find the Bhangra and since Punjabis are all over the place, I bet you will find Bhangra anywhere in India, not to mention anywhere in the world, if you look for it. I would seek out colleges and ask the Punjabis (or others) there if there are any cool Bhangra parties or Punjabi Cultural Society functions going on in the areas you are in. I bet they can guide you to everything from official functions to underground invitation only Bhangra parties.
Give it a shot :)
