STATELESS 004 - Friday, April 28th @ Amnesia (SF)

Hi All,

Thanks to all that made it out to the last Stateless, which was also a part of Dhamaal's Sights and Sounds Festival. Amnesia was once again packed with thick sonics and a diverse crowd of revelers and music afficiandos. MC Rai played a beautiful arabic set and the DJ crew (Radiohiro and DJ Warp) from Chicago was solid...

We'll be steppin' forward with the fourth episode of Stateless on Friday April 28, again at Amnesia (853 Valencia, between 19th and 20th). This go round will feature this following line-up:

(1) Tomas (XLR8R) will open the night with dubwise and minimal techno sounds...

(2) Resident DJ, Special Agent K (Roots and Wires Hi-Fi, Stateless), will drop a set of diverse sounds, spanning bhangra, ragga breaks, asian massive to drum and bass... all while dropping dubwise samples, and manipulating effects, a siren unit, and analogue delay live... This time, he will also drop some original productions, highlighting recently recorded indian classical talent from New Delhi, India - inna dubstep/breakbeat version!

www.rootsandwires.com
http://rootsandwires.blogspot.com/

(3) Tim Barsky is our featured live act. Tim is a traditional Ashkenazi storyteller and oral historian who has been getting increasing attention for his unique performance style, which blends hip-hop, street theatre, and Jewish folklore. He's also the world's first battle flutist! Using just a flute and a microphone, Tim can beatbox, "scratch", manipulate beats, drop classics, and play up to 8 lines at the same time, without loops or sampling. Taking the aesthetic of the battle DJ and integrating it into the flute, Tim is pioneering the art form of woodwind percussion.

http://www.timbarsky.com/

(4) Resident DJ, The Worker (Novo Sounds, Stateless), will close out the night with his ecletic, dancefloor shakin' sounds - from breaks to baile funk...

Please come check it!

Khenu (special agent k)

P.S.
The doors open at 9PM and the cover is only $5. There will be a limited number of CD giveaways as well...

A small ritual for the coming Tuesday..the 'new moon' NIGHT. Please check this out at

your respective places. On this new moon day, India has a festival of light called "Diwali".

It also has a lot of other cosmic significances too.
There is a small ritual to be done to attract money.
On a ceramic plate, place some diskettes of camphor. Wear red and face the west

direction. Burn in it cloves. Take care that the cloves should be with it's 'ball' on its

apex.the top. Let the cloves burn completely to black ash.If they have not fully burnt out,

add some more camphor diskettes.Take this black powder & put it in a small silver box &

place it wherever you place your money.

All the time while the clove is being burnt, keep on chanting "AUM HREENGM SHREENGM

NAMAH".

This is a tried & tested 'totka'.Please pass this on.Any query, please contact me.

Ward off every calamity...

A small recitation, done during Navratra (October 9 days from 4th to12th)..recited just 27

times, facing north in the nights..is highly effective Siddhi to ward off every calamity.

Must be repeated every year during Navratra. One must have a Ma Durga photo/idol in

front. Burn an oil lamp to HER right ; incense to HER left. Sitting on red asana &

offerring red flowers to her ..recite:-

"AUM Namo-a-stute Bhagwate, Paarshwa Chandraa-dharendra Padmaavati Sahitaaye ,may

abheeshta siddhim;
Dushtagraha bhasm bhakshyam swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha;
Hillihilli Maatangani Swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha".

Daily 27 times for 9 nights of Navratra. When in danger, just recite it 7 times & blow

thrice shoulder to shoulder. You will be safe.
___________________________________________________________________________
It is too vast and beyond the scope of this letter to write the ACTUAL spiritual aspect of

Navratri ( Nav=Nine: Raatri (as it is pronounced)=Nights). There are two such Navaratris in

a year. One around March and one around October/Nov....depending on the Hindu Lunar

Months. Again, there are two 'facets' of Navratri. One the Pauraanic (ancient folklore)

aspect and one metaphysical aspect. I guess you may FIND latter too on the internet. Just

type "Navratri" on Google.

Siddhi means 'attainment'....especially spiritual kind. And the person who has attained

Siddhi..is called Siddha Purush. Purush meaning Man. "The man who has attained". This

attainment can be got by many methods..but Mantras (incantations in a specific way for a

specific purpose) is the BASE.

Durga is a combination of Duh (not as in US DUHH..lol) + gaah. The combo makes it

Durga. Duh.. D pronounced in softer note as the French do. Duh means bad/evil..Gah

means to 'ward off'. So Durga means she who wards off the bad/evil etc. And there are

stories about her.

ANY QUERY PL.CONTACT ME FOR CLARIFICATION.
Blessings to all;
Chandan

So, I went to a Bhangra party last weekend and the DJ played some pieces that had only drums, getting faster towards the end.
When I asked him what this was, he said he had bought the CD in Rajasthan and it was called "Punjabi Boliyan".
Very funny....

So, does anybody know about CDs with only drums? It sounded really cool!

Local illustruous writer and scene-scoper Mark B writes up a nice article about the origins of Dhamaal and the Dhamaal movement in the noise section of the SF Bay Guardian this week.
http://www.sfbg.com/39/49/noise_subcon.html

Really nice to see that S. Asian and World Electronica Breakbeat music is being recognized and actually covered in the mainstream press. Thanks to all the Dhamaal crew and those in the SF music community and beyond that have contibuted to us moving forward!

WORLDLY III Printable PreSale Ticket Inside

Hello Friends,

Thank you for coming out to Worldly III – it is going to be incredible!

In order to streamline the process of getting you into 1015 Folsom I have created the printable pdf that is attached.

http://www.dhamaalsf.com/Worldly/Volume3/May1015Ticket.pdf

1. Print it out and bring it the event
2. Show it to the 1015 Folsom Box Office Staff for 15$ Entrance
3. Important: Each person that wants to get on the 15$ List must have a printout
4. You can forward this email to friends so they can make a print out too

The link also has information about the space, performances and where each room is – 1015 Folsom is a big club and having a copy of the attachment to look at will be useful (make an extra copy though since you will have to surrender one copy to get the $15 discount entrance).

Bhangra Club Nites In Your Area

The continuing global popularity of Bhangra-fusion and Panjabi-influenced music is making a dent on the airwaves and the clubscene. Everybody from UK soul gal trio Mis-Teeq (who currently have a US hit with Scandalous) to Thai pop diva Tata Young have had that touch of Panjabi flava added to their hits. Not only is worldwide radio picking up on this hot Desi sonic trend, but global clublands have also been paying attention.

I wanted to start this thread so we could share info on the efforts of djs and other individuals to promote our fave musical genre in the club scene, and hopefully attend and show our support for some these events. Of course, one-off events can still be listed under Tribe listings; this thread should focus more on reviews of regular club nites featuring Bhangra music in different localities.

I'm in Portland, OR, this weekend, hence my first post will be about the fortnightly event, XLR8R and Six Degrees Records present ATLAS - international beats with DJs Anjali, The Incredible Kid, and E3 at Holocene
www.sixdegreesrecords.com/tourd.....ghts.asp

www.holocene.org/calendar.htm

Holocene is a resto-lounge-club that plays host to the city's most diverse, multicultural, worldtronica club nite, ATLAS. At 10:45 pm, the cover charge policy was in effect (a very affordable $5), and a decent crowd was lounging on the ample sofas and bar.

At 11:00, DJ Anjali was up and opened her set with two records by multicultural Danish-based rap trio Outlandish, Walou and Guantanamo, both in their bhangra remixes, which set the tone for the evening. She then kicked off a full two-hour bhangra-infused set, an admirable feat, considering the very much underground status of Bhangra-fusion in the US. Heard that night were classics such as Bally Sagoo's remix of Mera Laung Gawacha, and more recent hits such as Sukshinder Shinda feat. MC Cheshire Cat's Gal Sunja. By midnite, the dancefloor was packed with revelers who continued to stream in.

It was a very eclectic and friendly crowd, certainly the most diverse I have seen in Pdx in the 48 hours since I've been there. The party went on till 3 am, which, from what I've been told, is a decent wrap-up time for Portland-area clubs.

Anyone in vancouver or nearby might want to consider checking out the vancouver International Bhangra Competition: www.vibc.org

There's also an afterparty that night, see details here: http://atownpresents.com/event_details_vibc.html

This will be a great opportunity to see one of the biggest names in bhangra, Sukshinder Shinda. His cd "Gal Sunja" is currently one of my favorites. Signia is also on the bill and I've seen them before and they are really fantastic.

This is a really exciting event!!

my 1st bhangra show

Hi all,

Just wanted to report that me and a friend went to see RDB in Vancouver last weekend and had an amazing time. Mantra and Signia (I think they're both local?) opened for RDB and were both fantastic -- in fact, I think Signia stole show. They were so positive and energetic, and the music was fantastic! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for them...they are really good.

I was thrilled to see RDB, and though he was great and I respect his work, I still think Signia impressed me more with their energy and enthusiasm. Those guys have a fabulous stage presence.

It was my first bhangra show, and let me tell you, I am hooked. I've already been exploring cds and MP3s of bhangra, but this show made me realize that *nothing* beats hearing it live. I think it's the dhols -- dhol beats are so incredible to hear full blast close up.

The crowd was really friendly and we met some great people. I sure hope to go to more shows like this soon.

...I wasn't sure if I heard correctly, but I think they announced that Dr Zeus and the Richi Rich Project are coming to Vancouver soon?!? Can anyone confirm this?

Kush -BhangraIndustrial Dancehall Madness from San Francisco

Kush -BhangraIndustrial Dancehall Madness from San Francisco

Hello, this is Kush Arora from RecordLabelRecords, based here in San Francisco Bay Area. I want to turn you on to my cd "Underwater Jihad"and upcomign cd "Bhang Ragga" which is basically a whole new direction of industrial music, punjabi bhangra, and dancehall, experimental sounds- putting it together in a non jungle/sample cd beats form, and giving it to you raw from the dark side of the asian underground that seems to be completely absent in the world today - tackling the ridiculous politics of today, living in 9/11 america with idiots, and a hate for freemasons.
Here I take vocalists from Jamaica, India, and beyond with live dhol, tabla, tumbi, double flute, insane dancehall and bhangra beats mashed together in a sound design futuristic style and much more. A dub style from beyond right now for all desi youth brought up in this country and all over who refuse to let their entire musical heritage be summed up by a bunch of sleazy club producers who just rip other people off like leeches- You will find no bad desis trying to rap or be dreadlocks, catchy club mixes that sound like 50 cent with out of time dhols, or adult contemporary "indian electronic" music. RecordLabelRecords is here to show these forms of music approached from a progression point of view, not commercial approval.
Check it- practicaly half the album is given away on the site and the newer tracks can be found directly here- posted today. Also, view the upcoming issue of XLR8R magazine to get tracks by me and other RLR artists with the magazine.

Hi all, I've got a trainspotting inquiry for you!

I was listening to one of Adil Ray's BBC shows online and he played a gorgeous r&b-style bhangra track that used a sample of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". There were both male and female vocals.

Anyone know this track and artist? I want it!!

Do any of you have any recommendations for bhangra streaming or downloads?

I've got one to recommend -- BBC's weekly show "Desi Beats" can be streamed from their "Listen Again" page here:

Any others?

Current Bhangra Faves

Ok, guyz. Here are my current bhangra faves. I've divided them into Bhangra/Bhangra-Fusion and Bhangra-esque categories (the latter more "inspired" by the genre, w/out incorporating too much of the typical bhangra elements, i.e. tumbi, dhol, Punjabi lyrics, etc).

Bhangra/Bhangra-Fusion
1. Gal Sun Ja - Sukshinder Shinda feat. MC Cheshire Cat

2. Dig Dig Desi - Daler Mehndi

3. Shaba Ni Shaba (from "Pinjar") - Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam & Udit Narayan

4. Tera Aashiq - Bally Sagoo feat. Surjit Khan & MC Marga

5. Bhangra - Amarjit Dhanda

Bhangra-esque
1. Son De Amores (ferrero & del moral bhangra mix) - Andy Y Lucas. For Ferrero & Del Moral, bhangra has become a catchword for Oriental sonicbytes, fusing together with Arabo-Andalucian sounds and influences.

2. Shine (dubshakra mix) - Bond. This remix of the UK violin quartet strips away all the Egyptian influences of the original version and replaces it with more of a Desi sound, complete with "balle balle" samples.

3. Ka-Ching! (simon & diamond bhangra mix) - Shania Twain. Having released an entire Desified version of the Canadian country star's last CD, the Birmingham, UK-based duo of Simon & Diamond released this additional remix with a bouncy dhol 'n bass beat.

4. Marsoul Il Hob - Hasna. Produced by the amazing Said Mrad, sung by this up-and-coming Lebanese songstress, this reworking of a Moroccan classic incorporates the tumbi in its intro, making it a unique Bhangra-Arabic pop number!

5. Me Pongo Colorada (bhangra remix) - Papa Levante. One of the first Spanish mixes to embrace the Bhangra phenomenon, the result actually owes more than a nod to Algerian rai, but still fun to listen and dance to, which captures the spirit of bhangra!
